We’re all in this together

We all experience ups and downs, and we know the more people you have in your corner, the better.

Your child's safety is extremely important to us. Big Brothers Big Sisters conducts a thorough background check on every volunteer in our program, and every relationship is closely monitored and supported by a professionally trained match specialist. We support our Bigs with all sorts of resources and regularly check in with our matches. We’ve designed everything we do to create healthy opportunities for your child’s learning and growth. Every child is unique, and we’ve designed our programs to effectively serve your child’s individual needs. Bigs come in all ages, from all backgrounds. Our volunteers can be Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Big Couples, or Big Families. We currently have three ways to get your Little involved with a mentor.

Qualification

There is no charge to enroll as a Little, nor will there ever be a charge. How do I enroll a Little into the Big Brothers Big Sisters program? Enrolling a Little requires the individual who is referring the child to complete a Child Inquiry Form. Simply complete and submit the form at the bottom of this page to begin the process of finding your child a Big Brother or Big Sister.

Is there a charge to be a Little?

We take the phrase “it takes a village” seriously. Children who enroll in Big Brothers Big Sisters benefit from another consistent adult who can be a friend, role model and guide who clear the path for a child's brightest future. Our data show that Littles in Washington County are more likely to succeed in school, say no to drugs and alcohol and build healthier relationships with families and peers. Mentoring improves self confidence, self esteem, and competence; making our community better — forever.

A Little must live in Washington County and be at least 6, in first grade and not more than 14 at inquiry. A parent, guardian, teacher, school counselor, social worker or an adult friend can refer a child to become a Little, but parental permission is required for a child to be accepted into the program. Most Littles have an interest in wanting another adult friend in their life and are excited about the opportunity to be matched with a Big.

It is simple to enroll a child – but it may take time to find just the right match. Children and adults are matched by where they live, their age preference and activities they enjoy. There is no set time limit to make a match. BBBS asks for the family’s patience during the waiting period.
